How often should you get a haircut?
The right interval isn't about how fast your hair grows – it's about how fast the cut loses its shape. Here are the intervals we recommend in the salon, broken down by style and hair type.
Short answer
How often should you get a haircut?
Get a skin fade cut every 2–3 weeks, a short men's cut every 3–4 weeks, medium-length hair every 6–8 weeks and long hair every 8–12 weeks. Beard lines hold 3–4 weeks and colour needs a touch-up every 5–8 weeks depending on contrast.
Intervals by style
Hair grows about 1.25 centimetres a month on average. That sounds like little, but on a short cut it's enough to blur the lines. With a skin fade or short clipper cut the regrowth shows after two weeks, and by three the shape is gone. On longer hair the same centimetre barely registers – there, maintenance is about removing worn ends instead.
As a rule of thumb: skin fade every 2–3 weeks, regular fade or short men's cut every 3–4 weeks, medium-length hair every 6–8 weeks and long hair every 8–12 weeks. With a taper or a softer, grow-out-friendly cut you can stretch the interval by a couple of weeks without looking unkempt.
Beards run on their own clock. A shaped beard line holds roughly three to four weeks before the cheeks and neckline need correcting. If you want the same shape year round, it's usually easiest to book a beard trim in the same visit as your haircut.
Coloured hair is governed by regrowth, not length. Highlights and balayage last 10–14 weeks because the transition is soft, while full-coverage colour with clear contrast against your natural shade needs a touch-up every 5–8 weeks. Kids usually need a cut every 8–10 weeks, more often if the fringe reaches their eyes.
Skin fade 2–3 weeks, short cut 3–4 weeks
Medium length 6–8 weeks, long hair 8–12 weeks
Beard line every 3–4 weeks – ideally in the same visit
Find your own interval – step by step
Four steps to work out how often you personally need to book.
- 1
Start with the style
The shorter the bottom, the tighter the interval. Skin fade 2–3 weeks, short cut 3–4, medium 6–8, long hair 8–12 weeks.
- 2
Adjust for hair type
Thick hair loses its shape faster because volume grows outward. Fine hair keeps the silhouette longer but needs trimming so the ends don't look worn.
- 3
Factor in beard and colour
Add a beard trim every 3–4 weeks and colour maintenance every 5–8 weeks for high contrast, or every 10–14 weeks for highlights and balayage.

Book the next visit right away
Book your next appointment as you leave. You'll fall into a rhythm that keeps the cut in shape instead of chasing slots once it has already grown out.

Frequently asked questions
How fast does hair grow?
+
About 1.25 cm per month on average, roughly 15 cm a year. The rate varies with age, genetics and health, but your haircut interval depends far more on the shape of the cut than on growth speed.
Do haircuts make hair grow faster?
+
No – growth happens at the scalp. But trimming every 8–12 weeks stops worn ends from splitting upward, which means you keep more length over time.
How often does a skin fade need redoing?
+
Every 2–3 weeks. The transition down to skin is so short that a few millimetres of regrowth blurs the contrast. If you want longer between visits, choose a low fade or taper instead.
How often should kids get a haircut?
+
Roughly every 8–10 weeks, or sooner if the fringe reaches their eyes. We welcome children of all ages and adapt the pace to the child – see our kids barber in Stockholm page.
How often does coloured hair need a touch-up?
+
Full-coverage colour with clear contrast against your natural shade every 5–8 weeks. Highlights and balayage last 10–14 weeks because the regrowth blends more softly.
Can I book a haircut and beard trim together?
+
Yes, and it's usually the smartest option. We combine the haircut and beard trim in one visit so the hairline and beard line follow each other. Current prices are on our prices page.
